Odyssey Wonder Woman

I am sure to all my friends, it is no secret that I love the Odyssey Wonder Woman.  I am going to post some thoughts as to why.  After the previous run, which to me was violent and changed Wonder Woman core values, we needed something drastic. DC had to do something to make Wonder Woman relevant again.  I mean, the previous run had crazy Amazons now officially called Psychozons who wanted children at all cost and killed each other for that end.  Also, there were overtly Lesbian overtures dealing with Alkyone, the ring leader of the Psychozons.  Add to that a distant Hippolyta that was rather ambivalent and acted out of character, okay, she acted rather bitchy, a wimpy Zeus, a rather confused Athena, and a tangled mess of threads, the book had become unreadable.  It was losing readers by one thousand every month.

How did DC deal with this challenge? Well, they relaunched Wonder Woman in a bubble Universe with a brand new Character and a brand new costume.  OK, she is not my Wonder Woman, but after the previous version, she was the lesser of two evils.  Also, Don Kramer is an excellent artist.

The story has been great, although it changed hands from JMS to Phil Hester. Now it is about to be completed in a great crescendo, which is rather exciting. However, many fans do not like this version.  I absolutely love it because this Wonder Woman has to earn her right to become Wonder Woman, much like the Golden and Silver Age Wonder Woman.  This mantle was not handed to her, or I should say them, each Wonder Woman had to earn the mantle.  This Wonder Woman, who seems to be dancing between realities and possible futures, is struggling through life and is discovering who she is.  And is discovering what she is, an instrument of peace.  In the previous issues, she was quick to act and attack.  This past issue, we see her see a possible future and tears come to her eyes and she see what may occur.  Finally, I believe the status quo has been restored, but all this may be moot now, because in August 2011, DC will relaunch Wonder Woman yet again, with a new costume, and an attitude which seems more violent, suggested by the cover.  As excited as I am, there are some trepidations as to what these changes can mean.
